Christmas is a time about celebrating, we thought we would give you some fun and interesting Christmassy facts. Which facts do you know and which are new to you?
Fact 1:
Before the calendar was reformed in 1751, England celebrated Christmas on the equivalent of the 6th of January by our modern, Gregorian reckoning. That is why you may find in some parts of Great Britain, people still call the 6th of January, Old Christmas Day.
Fact 2:
The Russian Orthodox church still celebrates Christmas on January 7th. For Russian Orthodox members December 25th is just an ordinary working day. They also officially start the new year on January 14th, but everyone still celebrates New Year on January 1st like most of the Western World. So because it comes before their Christmas, New Year is a far more important holiday. Nothing takes the chill out of a Russian winter, like
personalised vodka as an xmas gift. These days, vodka comes in many varieties and you can even get engraved vodka as a personalised vodka gift. In Great Britain we have always favoured a nice glass of something a little darker, like wine or
personalised port.
Fact 3:
To celebrate their belief in the powers of the gods, the Norsemen held festivals. The father of the Gods was Odin or Thor, commonly called the Yule Father (Yule referred to the sun). The original Yule Log Ceremony was a festival celebrating the sun during the winter solstice, which occurs close to the time we celebrate Christmas today. These days
gift sets or champagne sets can inject a bit of traditional sparkle into your Christmas gift selection.
Fact 4:
In ancient Babylon, the feast of the Son of Isis (Goddess of Nature) was celebrated on December 25. Raucous partying, gluttonous eating and drinking, and gift-giving were traditions of this feast. Sound familiar? If the Babylonians were around today, they would be sure to enjoy a chilled bottle of
Christmas champagne. They might even drink personalised champagne from
engraved champagne flutes. You never know!
Fact 5:
In Mexico, wearing red underwear on New Year's Eve is said to bring new love in the upcoming year. If you want to celebrate your love, then there aren’t many better ways to do it than with a wine set.
Wine Gifts are a great way of celebrating a relationship. These days, you can even get engraved wine gifts, that can be make your love interest blush with joy.
Romantic Christmas Gifts are a sure-fire way to set sparks flying, What worked for the Russians and the Babylonians could work just as well for you, with a bottle of personalised vodka or engraved magnum champagne. Popping the cork on a great Christmas, and New Year, is the perfect way to celebrate this year, or any year.
